Trump’s Nuclear Deal with Saudi Arabia Sidesteps Israel Normalization Demand

In a significant development, the Trump administration finalized a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia that notably omits the traditional US requirement for Riyadh to normalize relations with Israel. Historically, successive US presidents have conditioned the transfer of nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia on the kingdom establishing diplomatic ties with Israel. This longstanding policy aimed to promote peace and stability in the Middle East by encouraging regional cooperation.

Meanwhile, the new agreement reflects a strategic recalibration in US-Saudi relations, prioritizing nuclear collaboration over diplomatic prerequisites. This shift could have broad implications for Middle Eastern geopolitics, potentially altering the dynamics of Arab-Israeli relations and the US’s role as a mediator in the region. The decision underscores the Trump administration’s focus on strengthening bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia amid evolving regional challenges.

Notably, this move may influence future US foreign policy approaches toward other Gulf states seeking nuclear technology. By decoupling nuclear cooperation from normalization demands, the US signals a more flexible stance that could accelerate nuclear development partnerships. However, this could also raise concerns among allies and regional actors about the long-term impact on peace efforts and non-proliferation objectives in the Middle East.
