Sindh Government Removes Closing Time Limits for Markets and Businesses

The Sindh government has officially revoked the restrictions on operating hours for businesses throughout the province. This change permits markets, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and marriage halls to function without any fixed closing times.

Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the development on his social media platform X, explaining that the decision was made after evaluating feedback and challenges faced by traders and industrialists. He shared a notification from the provincial Home Department confirming that all shops, markets, malls, hotels, food outlets, marriage halls, and marquees are now exempt from previous closure timings.

Memon emphasized that business centers will resume normal operating hours without any restrictions. He highlighted that this move demonstrates the government’s dedication to fostering economic growth, enhancing public convenience, and supporting the business sector. “The business community is the backbone of the economy,” he remarked, assuring that the government will continue addressing the concerns of traders.

Previously, business hours had been limited as part of energy conservation efforts amid rising fuel costs caused by global energy market fluctuations. Under the earlier policy, shops and markets outside divisional headquarters had to close by 8pm, while those within divisional headquarters could operate until 9pm. Essential services such as pharmacies, bakeries, milk shops, hospitals, and fuel stations were exempt from these restrictions.

The provincial government clarified that these measures were part of a broader austerity and energy-saving strategy aligned with federal conservation policies. The decision to lift the restrictions followed consultations with various stakeholders, including representatives from the business community.

Officials reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating economic activities while balancing the need for energy management. They also indicated that policies would continue to be reviewed and adjusted based on evolving circumstances and stakeholder feedback.
