Fuel Subsidy Eligibility Limited to Registered Vehicles, Govt Confirms

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has clarified that fuel subsidies will be extended exclusively to vehicles officially registered with the Excise Department. This announcement was made by Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja as part of the ongoing relief package aimed at alleviating public financial strain.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government has accelerated the rollout of these relief measures to provide timely assistance. A digital transfer system for distributing subsidies was inaugurated last night to promote transparency and operational efficiency.

During a press briefing alongside Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, Shaza Fatima Khawaja detailed the eligibility criteria, stressing that only vehicles with complete and verified registration documentation will qualify for the subsidy. Vehicles lacking proper registration or documentation will be excluded to ensure that the benefits reach the intended recipients.

Provincial governments have collaborated by sharing comprehensive data on registered vehicles with federal authorities, facilitating a transparent and streamlined payment process. The initiative is being closely monitored by the prime minister, with a steering committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar conducting multiple daily progress reviews.

Bilal Azhar Kayani provided further insights into the relief efforts, revealing that motorcycle owners will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre of fuel. He also highlighted that the government has already allocated Rs129 billion over the past three weeks to stabilize fuel prices and protect citizens from additional financial pressures.

In a significant development, the government has introduced a special relief package targeting public transport and goods transport operators, broadening the scope of support measures. These steps reflect the administration’s commitment to cushioning the impact of rising fuel costs on the general population.
