Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally conveyed his congratulations to Mojtaba Khamenei following his appointment as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. In his message, the Pakistani premier expressed hope that Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership will steer Iran towards a future marked by peace, stability, and economic prosperity. This development comes at a critical juncture for the region, as Iran navigates significant political and security challenges.

In addition to his congratulations, Shehbaz Sharif extended heartfelt condolences on the recent martyrdom of Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of Iran. Ali Khamenei’s death was reported after a coordinated series of strikes attributed to the United States and Israel, an event that has sent shockwaves across the region. The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement emphasizing the deep sorrow felt by the people of Pakistan, who stand firmly in solidarity with Iran during this difficult period.

Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence that Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership would uphold Iran’s dignity and guide the nation towards a path of peace and stability. He underscored the importance of this transition, noting that it holds significant implications not only for Iran but for the wider Middle East and South Asia. The Prime Minister highlighted the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and Iran, which is grounded in shared religious values, historical ties, cultural connections, and linguistic bonds.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations, Shehbaz Sharif pledged to work closely with the new Iranian leadership to enhance cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest. This includes economic collaboration, security partnerships, and cultural exchanges aimed at benefiting both nations. The Prime Minister also prayed for Mojtaba Khamenei’s health and success, as well as for peace and prosperity for the Iranian people.

Following the letter, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his congratulations publicly through a post on X, signaling Pakistan’s eagerness to maintain and deepen ties with Iran under its new leadership. This message comes amid heightened tensions in the region, following the recent attack that resulted in the death of Ali Khamenei. The 86-year-old leader was reportedly killed in an airstrike targeting his compound in Tehran, an event that Iranian state media described as a martyrdom and a severe blow to the Islamic Republic.

Satellite imagery from Airbus confirmed extensive damage to the targeted site, highlighting the scale of the attack. Iranian officials praised Ali Khamenei for consistently standing alongside his people and confronting what they termed “global arrogance.” In response to the strikes, Iran launched counterattacks and issued stern warnings of retaliation. The Iranian Cabinet condemned the operation as a “great crime” that would not go unanswered, while the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard vowed to carry out its “most intense offensive operation” against American and Israeli military bases.

This incident marks a significant escalation in US-Iran tensions, introducing new uncertainties about the future stability of the region. It also reflects the broader geopolitical contest involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, with potential ramifications for regional security and international diplomacy. The attack and its aftermath underscore the delicate balance of power in the Middle East and the challenges faced by leaders like Mojtaba Khamenei as they assume responsibility in such a volatile environment.
