PM Shehbaz Sharif Launches Strict Measures Against Fuel Hoarding to Secure Supply

In a decisive move to stabilize the fuel market and prevent artificial shortages, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level meeting focused on the status of petroleum products across Pakistan. The gathering brought together key government officials and ministers who provided a detailed briefing on the current reserves and supply situation amid ongoing regional uncertainties. The Prime Minister was assured that the country holds sufficient petrol stocks to meet national demand, dispelling rumors of any imminent scarcity.

During the session, the Ministry of Petroleum presented comprehensive data highlighting the adequacy of petroleum reserves, emphasizing that these supplies are well-positioned to support the country’s energy needs in the foreseeable future. This briefing came at a critical time when global and regional dynamics have the potential to disrupt supply chains, making it imperative for Pakistan to maintain a firm grip on fuel availability and distribution.

Following the updates, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a stern directive to provincial administrations, instructing them to take immediate and uncompromising legal action against those involved in hoarding petroleum products. He underscored that any petrol station found guilty of deliberately creating shortages by stockpiling fuel must face severe consequences, including the sealing of their outlets, cancellation of licenses, and initiation of criminal proceedings against the responsible parties. This crackdown aims to deter malpractice and protect consumers from artificial price hikes and scarcity.

In addition to enforcement measures, the Prime Minister tasked the Petroleum Minister with conducting visits to various provinces to collaborate closely with local governments. Their goal is to devise a robust and coordinated strategy that ensures the conservation of petroleum products and guarantees an uninterrupted supply chain to the public. This approach reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency in managing vital resources.

To enhance oversight, the Prime Minister also called for the development of a real-time monitoring dashboard. This digital platform will track the movement and distribution of petroleum products across the country, providing timely data to provincial authorities. By implementing this system, the government aims to prevent fuel diversion and ensure that transportation logistics are closely supervised, thereby safeguarding the interests of consumers and the economy.

The meeting was attended by several prominent figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Jam Kamal Khan, Ahsan Iqbal Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Owais Leghari. Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani and Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan were also present, alongside Governor State Bank Jameel Ahmad. Additionally, chief secretaries from the four provinces, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan participated, highlighting the inclusive and nationwide scope of the government’s efforts to address fuel supply challenges.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister expressed solidarity with Turkiye and Azerbaijan following recent attacks, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for its regional partners during turbulent times. This gesture underscores the broader geopolitical context within which Pakistan is managing its energy security, balancing domestic needs with regional stability concerns.
