The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has announced a significant leadership change with the appointment of Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed as the new Commander of the Air Force Strategic Command (AFSC). This key position, based at the PAF headquarters in Islamabad, plays a crucial role in overseeing Pakistan’s aerial strategic capabilities and ensuring readiness amid a complex and evolving security environment in the region.

Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed’s career spans more than three decades, having been commissioned in December 1992 into the General Duty (Pilot) branch. Throughout his extensive service, he has accumulated a wealth of experience in both operational command and strategic planning. His leadership portfolio includes commanding a fighter squadron and managing a fully operational air base, demonstrating his hands-on expertise in frontline air operations. Additionally, he has served in senior staff capacities, notably as Assistant Chief of Air Staff for Operational Requirements and Development, where he contributed to shaping the future capabilities of the PAF.

Beyond his operational roles, AVM Aurangzeb has also been entrusted with critical strategic and communication responsibilities. His previous appointments as Director General Public Relations and Director General Warfare & Strategy highlight his versatility in managing both defence communications and high-level strategic oversight. His public profile rose sharply during the heightened aerial tensions between India and Pakistan in May 2025, when he delivered a widely publicized briefing. In that statement, he asserted that the PAF had successfully intercepted all Indian aircraft and drones during the confrontation, characterizing the outcome as a decisive “6-0” victory. The confident tone and clarity of his briefing resonated across social media platforms, sparking widespread discussion and recognition of his leadership.

Educationally, AVM Aurangzeb is well-prepared to lead the AFSC, holding advanced degrees that complement his operational experience. He earned a master’s degree in Military Arts from China, reflecting international military education exposure, and another master’s in National Security and War Studies from the National Defence University in Islamabad. This combination of academic achievement and practical expertise equips him to steer the strategic command’s critical assets and guide future defence initiatives in line with Pakistan’s national security objectives.

Throughout his distinguished career, Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed has been honored with several prestigious awards recognizing his service and dedication. These include the Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military), Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Military), and Sitara-e-Basalat, among others. Such decorations underscore his commitment to excellence and valor in the line of duty.

His appointment to lead the Air Force Strategic Command comes at a time when Pakistan continues to navigate complex regional security dynamics. The AFSC’s role in managing strategic aerial assets is vital for maintaining deterrence and safeguarding the country’s airspace. AVM Aurangzeb’s extensive background in both operational command and strategic planning positions him well to meet these challenges head-on, ensuring that the PAF remains a formidable force in the region.
