Punjab Government Rolls Out Comprehensive E-Tagging and Security Enhancements for Vehicles

The Punjab government has taken a significant step towards modernizing its security infrastructure by approving the implementation of electronic tagging, commonly known as e-tagging, for all vehicles within the province. This initiative, which includes motorcycles as well, aims to bolster vehicle monitoring capabilities and enhance overall public safety. The decision was finalized during a high-level law and order meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, reflecting the administration’s commitment to leveraging technology in addressing security challenges.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need to adopt advanced surveillance methods to keep pace with evolving threats. The e-tagging system will enable authorities to track vehicles more efficiently, thereby facilitating quicker responses to criminal activities and improving traffic management. This move is expected to significantly reduce incidents involving stolen vehicles, smuggling, and other unlawful activities that exploit gaps in current monitoring systems.

In addition to the e-tagging rollout, the meeting underscored the importance of developing a comprehensive micro-security plan, which the Chief Minister has mandated to be submitted within the next seven days. This plan is intended to address localized security concerns with tailored strategies, ensuring that every district in Punjab benefits from enhanced protective measures. The government’s focus on micro-level security highlights its proactive approach to safeguarding citizens at the grassroots level.

Another major development announced was the establishment of the Punjab Cybercrime Investigation Unit. This specialized unit will include a dedicated cell focused on providing support to vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, who fall victim to online crimes. Recognizing the rising threat of cyber offenses, the government also plans to set up district-level online crime centers to ensure swift investigation and resolution of digital crimes across the province. The Chief Minister has approved the appointment of a head for this new cybercrime unit, signaling a structured and authoritative approach to tackling cyber threats.

Security enhancements will not be limited to cybercrime alone. The meeting also approved measures to tighten control over provincial borders by banning unauthorized movement through non-traditional entry points. To reinforce this, searchlights will be installed at strategic provincial entry routes, and drone surveillance systems will be deployed to monitor these areas more effectively. Furthermore, the Chief Minister directed officials to implement rooftop security monitoring at key check posts and expedite the procurement of advanced drone defense systems to counter unauthorized drone activity, which has become a growing security concern.

Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify combing operations aimed at identifying and apprehending criminals and suspected militants. To support these efforts, the Riot Management Police (RMP) will receive enhanced training and modern equipment to improve their capacity for crowd control and rapid response during public order situations. This comprehensive upgrade in resources is expected to strengthen the overall law enforcement framework within the province.

In a related security matter, participants at the meeting agreed on the importance of drafting detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the observance of Youm-e-Ali, following consultations with religious scholars. This initiative seeks to ensure that security arrangements during significant religious events are both respectful and effective, minimizing risks while maintaining public order.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif concluded the session by stressing the critical need for constant vigilance and adaptability in security strategies. She highlighted that the nature of warfare and criminal tactics is continuously evolving, and complacency could have dire consequences. “We cannot afford satisfaction,” she remarked, urging all stakeholders to work in unison through coordinated efforts to combat terrorism and uphold law and order throughout Punjab.
