The persistent foul odour affecting Karachi’s coastal areas has been attributed to the decomposition of large quantities of phytoplankton washed ashore. Experts explain that fluctuations in sea temperatures have led to the mass die-off of these microscopic marine plants, which subsequently decay and emit the unpleasant smell experienced by residents along the coastline.
Moazzam Khan, technical adviser at the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P), elaborated that the end of the monsoon season combined with a reduction in wind speeds disrupts the marine vegetation system. These environmental changes contribute to the accumulation of dead phytoplankton on the shore, intensifying the odour problem in the coastal belt.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that Karachi will continue to experience hot and humid weather conditions today. The Met Office noted that a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has weakened further, allowing sea breezes to return to the city from this evening. This shift in weather patterns may influence the dispersion of the odour in the coming days.
Additionally, the PMD indicated that winter conditions might be extended in the northern and upper regions of the country, with above-normal winter rainfall expected nationwide. These climatic trends highlight the complex interplay between seasonal changes and marine ecosystem dynamics affecting Karachi’s coastal environment.
