Heavy Rain and Hailstorms Forecast with NDMA Flash Flood Alerts

The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and hailstorms across various regions of the country in the upcoming days. In a significant development, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued warnings for possible flash floods and landslides, particularly affecting northern areas.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall are expected in multiple parts of the country, with isolated hailstorm incidents also likely. The NDMA’s alert, effective from Thursday through June 15, highlights the potential for flooding in the upper regions.

Specifically, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are forecasted to experience rainfall combined with strong winds and thunderstorms. This weather pattern increases the risk of localized flash floods, as mountain streams and seasonal waterways in these areas may see a significant rise in water levels.

The NDMA has identified several districts in KP—Chitral, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, and Mansehra—as vulnerable to flash flooding. Similarly, in AJK, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, and Rawalakot are considered at risk.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, authorities have cautioned that streams and nullahs in districts such as Gupis-Yasin, Ghizer, Diamer, Tangir, Darel, and Gilgit could overflow due to the heavy rains. Residents living near low-lying areas and waterways are urged to take necessary precautions and stay updated with weather advisories.

Moreover, the NDMA has issued a landslide warning for Gilgit-Baltistan and adjacent mountainous regions from June 12 to 15. Officials highlighted that landslides might cause temporary road blockages and travel disruptions, particularly along the Karakoram Highway and the Jaglot-Skardu Road.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department forecasts rainfall between June 11 and 13 in Islamabad, several districts of Punjab, KP, Sindh, and most parts of Balochistan. Isolated hailstorms may also occur during this period.
