Babusar Road Closure Extended to June 6 Due to Persistent Snowfall

CHILAS: The Gilgit-Baltistan police have extended the closure of Babusar Road until June 6, citing continued snowfall and hazardous weather conditions. This seasonal highway, which connects Gilgit-Baltistan with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa via Babusar Pass, was initially closed from May 31 to June 2.

Authorities are currently engaged in snow clearance operations; however, persistent snowfall at Babusar Top and surrounding areas is delaying restoration efforts. Machinery is actively working to remove snow and debris, but the weather remains a significant obstacle.

Earlier, district officials in Naran issued a travel advisory urging tourists, travelers, and transport operators to exercise caution due to ongoing snowfall and dangerous road conditions. They highlighted that some sections of the route are operating under one-way traffic flow, and travel after 6 pm is nearly impossible because of heavy snow and poor visibility.

Officials warned of multiple hazards including slippery roads, falling rocks, glacial activity, brake failures, and the risk of landslides, all of which threaten the safety of life and property. They advised travelers to avoid non-essential journeys, monitor weather updates closely, and adhere strictly to instructions from local authorities and police.

As an alternative route during the closure, authorities recommended using the Karakoram Highway via Dasu. Babusar Pass, situated at an elevation exceeding 4,100 meters (13,500 feet), had reopened on May 25 following its seasonal winter closure, which typically lasts from November to mid-May due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risks.

This route is a favored summer corridor for tourists traveling between Kaghan Valley, Chilas, and parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Nevertheless, it remains highly susceptible to sudden weather changes and landslides, necessitating ongoing vigilance and caution.
