Bollywood star Aamir Khan has candidly discussed his battle with alcoholism, revealing that it was his divorce from Reena Dutta that sparked this difficult period. He shared that prior to the separation, he was a teetotaller and rarely consumed alcohol except for film-related scenes.
Reflecting on the day Reena left with their children, Aamir described it as a pivotal moment that left him emotionally overwhelmed and struggling to cope. He recalled that there was alcohol at home intended for guests, which he began drinking that night, marking the start of a prolonged phase of heavy drinking.
He admitted that for approximately one and a half years following the divorce, he consumed nearly a bottle of alcohol each night. This was a significant change for someone who had not been a regular drinker before. Aamir acknowledged this period as a low point in his life, closely tied to the emotional turmoil caused by the end of his marriage, though he did not elaborate further on those struggles.
Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta in 1986 at the age of 21. The couple remained together for 16 years before separating in 2002. They share two children, Ira and Junaid. After their divorce, Aamir married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, with whom he has a son named Azad. The couple announced their separation in 2021 but continue to co-parent their child.
In a significant development, ahead of his 60th birthday in March 2025, Aamir publicly introduced his partner Gauri Spratt and has since appeared with her at various public events. His remarks were part of a broader conversation on Duologue with Barun Das, where he reflected on different phases of his personal life.
