Swiss-Pakistani Saadia Zahidi has been appointed as the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a historic milestone as the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the organisation’s history. Zahidi is set to take office on November 1, 2026, becoming the ninth individual to lead IATA.
Prior to this appointment, Zahidi held the role of Managing Director and was a member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she gained significant leadership experience. Her appointment has been warmly welcomed by IATA’s Board of Governors Chairman and LATAM Airlines Group CEO, Roberto Alvo, who expressed the board’s enthusiasm for her selection.
Alvo highlighted that Zahidi’s extensive background at the World Economic Forum will enhance IATA’s position as the global representative voice of the airline industry. He noted that she assumes the role during a period of rapid change, characterized by technological innovation and shifting geopolitical dynamics that are transforming the aviation sector.
He further emphasized that Zahidi’s expertise will be crucial in effectively advocating for the industry’s priorities and addressing its challenges amid this evolving landscape.
IATA represents over 370 airlines worldwide, covering roughly 85 percent of global air traffic. The association plays a vital role in supporting the aviation sector by promoting safe, sustainable, and efficient international air transport.
Saadia Zahidi’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in economics from Smith College, an MPhil in International Economics from the Graduate Institute, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, underscoring her strong foundation in economics and public policy.
