Pakistan Strengthens Energy Sector with New Oil and Gas Discoveries

Pakistan has made a significant advancement in its energy sector with the commercial production commencement from the Baragzai X-1 well located in the Nashpa Block. This development was formally inaugurated by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, who highlighted it as a key milestone for the nation’s energy security.

The minister emphasized that this new production will substantially bolster the country’s energy independence by reducing its dependence on imported fuel. Moreover, the project is projected to save approximately $329 million annually in foreign exchange reserves.

Currently, the Baragzai X-1 well is yielding about 15,000 barrels of crude oil daily, alongside 45 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Authorities anticipate these figures will rise to 25,000 barrels of oil and 60 million standard cubic feet of gas per day in the near future. The minister described this achievement as a critical step toward alleviating Pakistan’s ongoing energy crisis and enhancing domestic reserves.

In a related development, Mari Energies Limited announced a gas and condensate discovery at the Shams-1 exploratory well, situated within the Mari Development and Production Lease (D&PL) area in Ghotki district, Sindh. The well was drilled to a depth of 3,075 metres after being spudded on January 30, 2026, targeting the Lower Goru-B sands as the exploratory zones.

During testing, the Shams-1 well produced gas at a rate of 47.98 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) and 64 barrels per day of condensate at a choke size of 64/64”. The wellhead flowing pressure was recorded at a stabilized 2,404 psig. Mari Energies operates the Mari D&PL with full working interest, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding Pakistan’s domestic energy resources.
