Bahrain has announced plans to restore its ambassador to Iraq, a move it presents as a major step forward in bilateral relations. The announcement follows extensive regional talks and is seen as a sign that ties have taken a significant leap.
The decision comes after the long-awaited official visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi to the kingdom. It was the first visit by an Iraqi premier to Bahrain in more than two decades.
Foreign ministers discuss renewed cooperation
The resumption of cooperation was also discussed in a telephone call between Bahraini Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein. Al Zayani praised Al-Zaidi’s recent high-level visits to Manama.
During those visits, Al-Zaidi met King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The talks focused on restoring trust, strengthening economic and political relations, and developing the regional position.
Repairing a rift that began with the ambassador’s withdrawal
The move is viewed as a step toward mending a diplomatic rift that deepened earlier this year. Bahrain had withdrawn its ambassador amid regional instability and security fears.
Bahrain said restoring the ambassador reflects its firm commitment to correcting the relationship between the two countries. It also pointed to greater information sharing and official coordination across all levels of institutions.
