Iran has sent a nuclear proposal to the United States through Qatar, but it will only be discussed after Washington meets Tehran’s seven demands, a senior Iranian official said on Thursday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the US is reviewing the proposal. He declined to give further details.

Mediators push to end the Iran-US war

Mediators have stepped up efforts to end the conflict, amid fears it could flare again after the US midterm elections. On Tuesday, Trump would not rule out resuming combat after the vote, and Iran plans wider retaliation if fighting restarts.

Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s top security official, said during a visit to Russia on Thursday: “On the issue of diplomacy, we have announced seven conditions to the Americans.” He added that Iran will neither open the Strait of Hormuz nor negotiate until those conditions are met.

Sanctions, frozen assets and regional fighting

Iran has demanded the lifting of US sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets and war reparations, among other conditions. Washington has said nuclear issues must be part of any initial negotiations.

The conflict began when the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Iran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf states that host US bases. Fighting has also broken out in Lebanon and spread to Yemen, where the Houthis have targeted energy facilities, airports and other sites in Saudi Arabia.
