Overnight, Iran launched missiles targeting two US air bases in Jordan in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Larak Island. The US said it targeted Iranian launchers that were deploying mines into the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
This recent exchange underscores how quickly a conflict that had increasingly relied on sanctions, blockades, and economic pressure can escalate back into military confrontations. Although neither side appears eager to reignite full-scale war, both have indicated readiness to respond to any further aggression. Trump was quoted as saying, “We’re going to hit them hard,” signaling a firm stance on retaliation.
In remarks from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that these renewed strikes did not mark a return to all-out war. He described Iran as a “failed nation” with a severely weakened economy and military but cautioned that the US would continue to respond to provocations. When asked about the possibility of using nuclear weapons against Iran, Trump dismissed the idea, stating there was “no reason” since Iran was already “totally defeated militarily.”
An Iranian official described the missile exchange as a “limited and contained confrontation” but warned that Tehran would respond harshly to any further attacks. Trump claimed that US air defenses intercepted all Iranian missiles capable of causing damage and highlighted the significant impact of new US economic sanctions on Iran.
Earlier, Trump posted two videos on social media showing explosions at Iran’s main oil export terminal, Kharg Island, with the caption “Kharg island being blown to smithereens!!!” However, these videos were AI-generated and no such attack occurred. Iran dismissed the post as “laughable,” while Vice President JD Vance suggested Trump was “sending a message” through his unconventional social media approach.
So far, the US has refrained from targeting Iran’s major oil and gas infrastructure, aware that such actions could provoke devastating retaliations against Gulf neighbors. Instead, Washington has intensified economic pressure through “secondary sanctions” aimed at third countries purchasing Iranian oil.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that Iran’s recent aggressive actions stem from the severe economic toll of these sanctions. Speaking at a G20 finance ministers meeting in North Carolina, he said, “They’re in shock at the state of their economy” and suggested that Iran’s kinetic responses are driven by economic desperation. Bessent also indicated that new secondary sanctions, initially focusing on banks, would likely be announced weekly to maintain pressure on Tehran.
The US military struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday after observing preparations by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to deploy rockets with sea mines into the strait. Iranian media reported three casualties from the US attack, including two Revolutionary Guards Navy members. Larak Island is situated near the strategic Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, and the Strait of Hormuz handles about one-fifth of global crude oil and gas shipments but has been effectively blocked since the conflict began.
The US Central Command described its action as “limited, precise” and aimed at neutralizing an imminent threat posed by Iranian minelaying forces. Iranian state television claimed a supertanker was set on fire and stopped after hitting naval mines in the southern strait, a claim the US military denied.
In a significant development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed that Tehran still favors a negotiated resolution. Speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a regional security meeting in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian stated, “We believe that continuing the war is in no one’s interest, neither ours, nor the region’s, nor humanity’s.”
Trump’s initial goals at the conflict’s outset—to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program, limit its regional military capabilities, and foster conditions for regime change—remain unfulfilled as tensions persist on multiple fronts.
