Six Million Deportees Forced to Rebuild Lives Under Taliban Rule

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, more than six million Afghans have been deported or forced to return from neighboring countries, primarily Pakistan and Iran. This mass displacement has created a humanitarian crisis as many returnees arrive with little to no resources, struggling to reintegrate into a country grappling with economic collapse and political instability. The influx of deportees in 2023 alone has reached approximately one million, exacerbating the pressure on already fragile social services and infrastructure.

Many deportees report having never lived in Afghanistan before, highlighting the complex nature of forced returns where individuals are compelled to start anew in an unfamiliar environment. The Taliban’s governance has complicated international aid efforts, with restrictions and political considerations limiting the scope of humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, the lack of employment opportunities and basic services poses severe risks to the well-being and security of returnees, many of whom face discrimination and marginalization.

In a significant development, the ongoing deportations underscore the broader regional challenges linked to migration, border policies, and geopolitical tensions. The situation demands coordinated international responses to support sustainable reintegration and prevent further destabilization. Without effective intervention, millions of deportees may remain trapped in cycles of poverty and displacement, undermining prospects for peace and development in Afghanistan and the surrounding region.
