Victor Munoz netted a late goal to help Liverpool recover from a deficit and secure a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday. Forest seemed poised to claim all three points after Morgan Gibbs-White converted a penalty in the 70th minute, putting the visitors ahead 2-1. The penalty was awarded when Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson fouled Neco Williams inside the box.
However, Munoz, starting his first match for Liverpool, leveled the score in the 82nd minute. The forward skillfully turned before unleashing a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area that hit the underside of the crossbar and went in.
Forest had taken the lead in the first half through Dan Ndoye in the 24th minute. The Swiss striker finished a swift counterattack initiated by goalkeeper Matz Sels, who launched a long ball forward. Gibbs-White then assisted Ndoye, who calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner.
Liverpool had a first-half goal from Florian Wirtz disallowed after a VAR review confirmed Jeremie Frimpong was offside in the buildup. The Reds eventually equalized in the 60th minute when Alexander Isak scored. Cody Gakpo evaded his marker on the right flank and delivered a low cross across the goalmouth, allowing Isak to tap into an empty net after two Forest defenders failed to intervene.
Isak commented on the team’s progress, saying, “It’s been good, there is always time to get used to a new style. We are really working hard to try to play the game Iraola wants us to play. When we start doing that better, I have no doubt the results will come as well.”
This draw marked Liverpool’s second consecutive stalemate in the league under new manager Iraola. The team had previously needed a stoppage-time penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle in their opening match six days earlier.
Saturday’s result leaves Liverpool with two draws from their first two league games under Iraola, who took charge this summer following the club’s 2025 Premier League title win. Last season, despite spending £446 million, Liverpool finished a disappointing fifth under former manager Arne Slot.
