Algeria Announces FIFA World Cup Squad with Bentaleb, Aouar, Gouiri Back

Algeria has revealed its squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, featuring the return of midfielder Nabil Bentaleb along with attackers Houssem Aouar and Amine Gouiri. The announcement was made by head coach Vladimir Petkovic on Sunday as preparations continue for the tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Bentaleb, 31, makes a comeback to the national team after last playing in October. Having represented Algeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the midfielder has experienced several extended absences but impressed the coaching staff with his recent performances. Petkovic highlighted Bentaleb’s qualities both on and off the field, emphasizing his current good form.

Meanwhile, Aouar and Gouiri return to the squad after missing the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year due to injuries. Their inclusion significantly strengthens Algeria’s attacking lineup as the team gears up for the global event.

In a notable development, goalkeeper Oussama Benbot has been recalled despite previously announcing his retirement from international football following the Africa Cup of Nations. His return aims to bolster the goalkeeping options amid concerns, especially since first-choice keeper Luca Zidane remains sidelined after sustaining jaw and chin injuries while playing for Granada in April. Benbot recently played a crucial role in USM Alger’s victory in the African Confederation Cup this month.

Algeria, making its first World Cup appearance in 12 years, will play a friendly against the Netherlands in Rotterdam on Wednesday, followed by a match against Bolivia in Kansas City on June 10 as part of their final preparations. The North African team is drawn in Group J alongside defending champions Argentina, Austria, and Jordan.
