PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar has described the federal government’s decision to impose governor’s rule and a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as illegal. Speaking on Tuesday, he said his party would take the matter to the Peshawar High Court.
Gohar said that party lawyers would file the petition, which he called a challenge to an unconstitutional step. He added that the PTI would keep pursuing its struggle through constitutional and legal channels against what he termed unlawful action by the government.
Party stresses democracy and judicial independence
Gohar said the party backs democracy and an independent judiciary, arguing that removing an elected government and then imposing these measures is entirely illegal.
Federal government cites security and long march
The federal government imposed the measures citing worsening security in the province and the provincial PTI government’s inflexibility over the long march. PTI has governed KP since 2013, and the administration now removed was the party’s third straight term in the province.
