Jamaat-e-Islami Protests Erupt in Peshawar and Lahore Over Petroleum Levy

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has intensified its opposition to the government’s petroleum levy by organizing protests in key cities including Peshawar and Lahore. These demonstrations come amid growing public discontent over the rising cost of petroleum products, which many argue is exacerbating the economic challenges faced by ordinary Pakistanis.

In Peshawar, the party has planned a protest sit-in against the petroleum levy set to commence this evening. Meanwhile, party activists have been actively staging demonstrations to voice their concerns about the escalating fuel prices. Abdul Wase, the Central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, condemned the petroleum levy as an unfair policy that disproportionately affects the common people. He emphasized that the federal government collected a staggering Rs1.205 trillion from this levy last year alone, a figure that underscores the heavy financial burden imposed on farmers, laborers, and everyday citizens.

Simultaneously, Jamaat-e-Islami has established a protest camp at Charing Cross in Lahore as part of its broader campaign against the surge in petroleum prices. The protest began with a rally that started from Masjid-i-Shuhada, drawing a large crowd of supporters to the site. The presence of law enforcement officials has been notable, with police personnel deployed at Charing Cross to monitor the ongoing demonstration and maintain order.

These protests reflect the increasing frustration among various segments of society regarding the government’s fiscal policies on petroleum. The levy, intended as a revenue-generating measure, has sparked widespread criticism for its impact on the cost of living and the overall economic wellbeing of the population. Jamaat-e-Islami’s actions highlight the political and social tensions surrounding energy pricing in Pakistan, signaling potential challenges ahead for the government as it navigates public dissatisfaction.
