ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who also serves as Chief of Defence Forces, visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters on Tuesday to evaluate the country’s preparedness and response strategies for the ongoing monsoon season.
During his visit to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), he received a detailed briefing on Pakistan’s disaster management framework and coordination efforts aimed at addressing monsoon-related emergencies. NDMA Chairman Lt-Gen Inam Haider Malik presented an overview of the centre’s operational capabilities, highlighting advanced technology-driven response systems and the “Disaster Lens 2026” platform, which monitors current monsoon conditions and various natural hazards nationwide.
The briefing also included discussions on the authority’s coordination mechanisms for disaster response and the integration of technology to improve situational awareness and emergency planning. In a significant development, the Field Marshal commended NDMA’s initiatives to enhance Pakistan’s disaster management capacity and underscored the necessity of maintaining robust preparedness, effective inter-agency coordination, and rapid emergency response.
He emphasized that safeguarding lives, property, and critical infrastructure remains a top priority throughout the monsoon season. Furthermore, the army chief reaffirmed the armed forces’ dedication to supporting civil administration and NDMA efforts in relief, rescue, and rehabilitation operations whenever required.
Pakistan typically experiences heavy monsoon rains from July to September, which often result in flooding, landslides, and flash floods. These natural disasters frequently cause casualties and damage homes, roads, and public infrastructure, especially in vulnerable mountainous and low-lying regions.
Meanwhile, the NDMA continues to issue regular weather advisories and coordinate with provincial disaster management authorities as seasonal rains persist across various parts of the country.
