ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi emphasized the urgent need for prison reforms on Thursday, highlighting that safeguarding the rights of inmates is fundamental to the justice system. He called on provincial authorities to take immediate steps to improve the conditions within prisons.

Speaking at a national conference on prison reforms held in Islamabad, CJP Afridi stressed that genuine judicial reform depends not only on court decisions but also on their effective implementation. He noted that accountability measures within the justice system are currently being enforced with determination.

Addressing representatives from all provinces, the Chief Justice underscored the critical importance of prisoner rights, stating that ensuring access to healthcare and clean drinking water in detention facilities is essential.

While acknowledging progress in reducing the backlog of pending court cases, Afridi reminded provincial governments of their constitutional duty to manage and improve detention centers. He pointed out that the responsibility for prison upkeep lies squarely with the provincial administrations.

In a significant development, he revealed that committees at the provincial level have been formed to supervise and implement reforms aimed at enhancing prison welfare. Afridi reiterated that a strong criminal justice system is vital for the stability and progress of any society.
