Thai Zoo Trespassing Incident Involving Viral Pygmy Hippo Sparks Legal Action

In a startling incident at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, located roughly two hours from Bangkok, a Thai man illegally entered the enclosure of Moo Deng, a beloved baby pygmy hippo who has captured hearts worldwide. The zoo authorities confirmed on Wednesday that the man trespassed into the restricted area housing the endangered hippo, prompting them to file a formal complaint. This breach of security has raised serious concerns about visitor safety and animal welfare at the popular wildlife park.

Moo Deng, whose name charmingly translates to “bouncy pork,” has become an internet sensation due to her playful and endearing behavior, which has been widely shared across social media platforms. The young hippo’s popularity has not only attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the zoo but also significantly boosted ticket sales, making her a key attraction. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the man, dressed casually in a tank top, shorts, and sandals, was seen inside the enclosure recording Moo Deng with a tablet, footage released by local media outlets.

Zoo staff responded swiftly, taking approximately ten minutes to safely escort the intruder out of the pen, which is also home to Moo Deng’s mother. The zoo issued a statement emphasizing that the individual had entered a strictly prohibited area reserved for the animals and announced their intention to pursue legal action without exception. Fortunately, Moo Deng was unharmed by the intrusion, although she appeared visibly startled by the unexpected visitor.

Local police have confirmed that the man, who had visited the zoo accompanied by his grandnephew, admitted that his motive was to get a closer look at the famous hippo. Authorities have initiated a trespassing case, with investigating officer Athiwat Siralertthakorn stating that no arrests have been made yet. Under Thai law, individuals found guilty of trespassing into restricted animal areas can face penalties including up to one year in prison, a fine reaching 20,000 baht (approximately $618), or both.

Moo Deng, who celebrated her first birthday in July, has become more than just a zoo attraction. She has inspired a range of merchandise and internet memes since going viral earlier this year. Her appeal even caught the attention of major brands, with cosmetics giant Sephora featuring her radiant, peach-toned face in a recent beauty campaign. This incident underscores the challenges zoos face in balancing public engagement with the safety and well-being of their animals.
