Punjab Government Launches Legal Action Over False Claims on Official Aircraft Use

The Punjab government has announced its intention to pursue legal action against those spreading falsehoods regarding the use of its official aircraft. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb made the declaration on Sunday, condemning what she described as a targeted campaign of misinformation aimed at tarnishing the provincial administration’s reputation. This move highlights the government’s resolve to protect its institutions from baseless allegations and uphold the truth.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Minister Aurangzeb accused certain individuals and media outlets of orchestrating a “deliberate and malicious” effort to circulate fabricated stories about the provincial government’s aircraft. She referred to these actors as “known pathological liars and purveyors of fake news,” emphasizing the seriousness with which the government views these unfounded claims. The minister stressed that such disinformation would no longer be tolerated or ignored.

To counter these damaging narratives, the Punjab government has decided to invoke the Defamation Law of 2024, initiating court proceedings against every person and platform involved in disseminating false information. Aurangzeb warned that those attempting to malign public institutions and mislead citizens should be prepared to face stringent legal consequences. She further underscored the government’s commitment to seeking the maximum penalties allowed under the law, sending a clear message that spreading fake news is not a form of journalism but an act of defamation.

This announcement comes amid a heated political debate surrounding the recent acquisition of a Gulfstream business jet by the Punjab government. Valued at approximately Rs10 billion, the purchase has sparked criticism, particularly from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which alleges that the aircraft is intended solely for the personal use of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. These accusations have intensified the controversy, placing the provincial government’s spending decisions under intense public scrutiny.

However, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has firmly rejected these allegations, clarifying that the jet forms part of a larger strategic initiative known as “Air Punjab.” Bokhari, the government plans to establish a fleet of aircraft to enhance provincial connectivity and services. This fleet will include both purchased and leased planes, with the Gulfstream jet being a key component of this broader vision. The initiative aims to improve transportation infrastructure and facilitate official travel within the province and beyond.

Aviation insiders have confirmed that the Punjab government acquired a Gulfstream G500 aircraft, registered in the United States as N144S, for an estimated cost of around Rs10 billion. Flight tracking data reveals that the jet arrived in Lahore on December 28, following a journey that took it from Bangor in North America to Hurghada, Egypt, before landing at Allama Iqbal International Airport. The aircraft remained stationed at Lahore airport for approximately 40 days, during which it underwent extensive interior refurbishment and decoration to meet the provincial government’s specifications.

Since its refurbishment, the Gulfstream jet has begun operating domestic flights, with its inaugural journey taking place on February 6 from Lahore to Multan. The aircraft has since been utilized on multiple routes under the call sign “PUNJAB2,” servicing destinations such as Quetta, Mianwali, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi. This operational activity underscores the government’s commitment to utilizing the aircraft as part of its official transport infrastructure rather than for personal use.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the Punjab government remains steadfast in its efforts to combat misinformation and defend its administrative decisions. The case also reflects a broader challenge faced by public institutions in Pakistan, where the spread of false information can quickly escalate into damaging political controversies. By taking a firm stance, the Punjab government hopes to deter future attempts to undermine its credibility through baseless accusations.
