Man Escapes Death as Elevator Moves with Doors Open in Gujarat Incident

In a harrowing incident that has captured widespread attention, a man in Valsad city, Gujarat, barely escaped a deadly accident when an elevator suddenly shifted upward while he was stepping out. The alarming event unfolded in a residential complex located on Tithal Road, where the malfunctioning lift moved despite its doors remaining open, putting the man’s life at grave risk. The entire episode was caught on CCTV, and the footage has since gone viral, sparking a wave of concern among viewers and residents alike.

The video reveals the man entering the elevator at approximately 7:22 AM, pressing the button to ascend to a higher floor. Moments later, as the elevator doors slid open, he began to step out. Unexpectedly, the elevator cabin jolted upward while the doors were still open, nearly trapping him between the moving lift and the elevator shaft. By a narrow margin, the man managed to pull back and avoid what could have been a fatal fall or severe injury. This close call has raised serious questions about the safety mechanisms designed to prevent such occurrences.

Experts and residents have pointed to a likely failure in the elevator’s safety sensors or the interlocking system, which should prevent the lift from moving when the doors are open. This malfunction highlights a critical lapse in maintenance and safety protocols. Interestingly, technicians had visited the building just two days prior to the incident to fix minor issues such as the lift’s lighting and ventilation fan, but evidently, the more serious mechanical faults went unnoticed. The sudden movement of the elevator despite open doors indicates a dangerous oversight that could have had tragic consequences.

The loud noise caused by the elevator’s unexpected motion alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene in alarm. The viral video has since ignited a broader conversation about elevator safety standards, especially in residential buildings where regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to prevent such life-threatening incidents. Many netizens have expressed outrage and demanded stricter regulatory oversight to ensure that elevator companies adhere to rigorous safety checks.

This unsettling event in Gujarat brings to mind a similarly tragic accident that occurred in Karachi earlier this year. On December 5, 2024, a 10-year-old boy lost his life after becoming trapped in an elevator shaft in a residential building in the Gulistan-i-Jauhar area. Rescue 1122 official Hassaan Khan, the boy was caught when the elevator began moving while he was stuck between floors, resulting in fatal injuries. This incident underscored the urgent need for improved elevator safety measures across urban residential complexes in Pakistan and neighboring regions.

Both incidents serve as grim reminders of the potential dangers posed by malfunctioning elevators and the critical importance of regular, comprehensive maintenance. Authorities and building management companies are being urged to prioritize the safety of residents by implementing stringent inspection routines and upgrading outdated equipment. As urban populations grow and high-rise living becomes more common, ensuring the reliability of elevators is essential to prevent avoidable tragedies.
