Nicola Coughlan Opens Up About Body Comments and Personal Struggles in Candid Interview

Nicola Coughlan, the acclaimed Irish actress known for her roles in popular series like Bridgerton and Derry Girls, recently opened up about a deeply unsettling experience with a fan that left her feeling vulnerable and distressed. During a candid conversation, she recalled an incident where a drunken admirer fixated on her physical appearance rather than her acting talents, an encounter that made her feel so uncomfortable she admitted she “wanted to die.” This moment, she explained, highlighted a recurring issue she faces in the entertainment industry—how discussions about her work often get overshadowed by comments about her body.

In an interview featured in the April edition of Elle UK, Coughlan reflected on the awkward bathroom encounter where a fan praised the Netflix hit Bridgerton but immediately shifted the focus to her physique. She described the fan’s words as both bizarre and disheartening, emphasizing how such remarks detract from her professional achievements. The actress expressed frustration over the persistent tendency to reduce her identity to her size and appearance, rather than recognizing her dedication and skill.

Despite maintaining a size 10 figure, Nicola revealed that she is frequently labeled as plus-size in public discussions, a categorization she finds perplexing and somewhat troubling. She recounted how, during the filming of Bridgerton, she was actively working out and had lost weight, even fitting into a size eight corset for one of her scenes. Yet, the media and audiences still described her as the “biggest woman” they wanted to see on screen, a label that left her questioning societal standards and the narrow definitions of body image in the entertainment world.

Adding another layer to her perspective, Coughlan shared her stance on the body positivity movement, stating that she does not personally align with it. She explained that growing up, she never fixated on actors’ bodies and instead focused on their performances. This viewpoint sometimes surprises people, but she remains firm in her belief that her size should not define her or her career. The actress also highlighted the emotional toll it takes when months of hard work on a project are ultimately overshadowed by superficial remarks about her appearance.

Beyond her experiences with body image, Nicola Coughlan also touched on her recent diagnosis of ADHD, which has brought her a newfound sense of understanding and compassion towards herself. She described the diagnosis as receiving a “handbook” for her brain, helping her make sense of challenges she previously struggled to explain. This clarity has allowed her to approach her life and career with greater patience and grace, a shift that has positively impacted her well-being.

Nicola Coughlan’s career continues to flourish as she remains a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. She is widely recognized for her portrayal of Penelope Bridgerton in Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton and Clare Devlin in the Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls. In addition, she appeared in the 2023 blockbuster film Barbie and earned a BAFTA nomination for her role in Channel 4’s Big Mood. Her openness about personal struggles and industry challenges adds a relatable dimension to her public persona, resonating with many fans worldwide.

The full interview with Nicola Coughlan is available in the April issue of Elle UK, which hit the stands on March 10, offering readers an in-depth look at her journey both on and off the screen.
