Largest Oil and Gas Reserves Unearthed in Kohat, Boosting Pakistan’s Energy Outlook in 2026

The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has revealed a groundbreaking discovery of substantial oil and gas reserves in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This find is being hailed as the most significant in Pakistan’s energy sector for the year 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to bolster its domestic energy production capabilities.

In an official statement submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, OGDCL confirmed that the newly identified reserves in Kohat represent the largest discovery made so far this year within the nation’s oil and gas exploration landscape. This announcement has generated considerable optimism among energy experts and policymakers, who view the development as a crucial step toward strengthening Pakistan’s energy security.

The discovery comes at a time when Pakistan is striving to reduce its dependence on imported fuels, which have historically placed a heavy burden on the country’s economy. By tapping into these indigenous resources, the government aims to not only meet rising domestic energy demands but also to stabilize the market by curbing the volatility associated with global oil prices.

While the exact volume of the reserves and projected production figures have yet to be disclosed, OGDCL has indicated that further technical evaluations and well testing are underway. These assessments will provide a clearer picture of the field’s potential and help formulate a detailed development plan to maximize output efficiently and sustainably.

Experts believe that this discovery could play a pivotal role in transforming Pakistan’s energy landscape by providing a reliable source of hydrocarbons. It is expected to generate economic benefits through job creation, increased energy availability, and potential export opportunities in the long term. Moreover, the find underscores the importance of continued investment in exploration activities across the country’s underexplored regions.

As the government and industry stakeholders await more comprehensive data, the Kohat discovery stands as a beacon of hope for Pakistan’s energy future. It highlights the strategic importance of leveraging domestic resources to achieve greater energy autonomy and economic resilience in an increasingly uncertain global energy environment.
