Kevin Spacey Faces Expanded Civil Lawsuits Over Decades-Old Sexual Assault Claims in UK

In a significant development in the ongoing legal battles surrounding Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, three British men pursuing civil claims against him for alleged sexual assaults have requested permission from London’s High Court to introduce evidence from seven other accusers. These additional allegations, some dating as far back as the late 1970s, are set to be considered during a civil trial scheduled for later this year. The move aims to establish a broader pattern of behavior by the actor, who has consistently denied all accusations of sexual misconduct.

The three primary claimants assert that Spacey sexually assaulted them at different points between 2000 and 2013. Notably, two of these men were also complainants in Spacey’s 2023 criminal trial held in London, where he was ultimately acquitted of all charges. Despite the criminal court’s verdict, the civil proceedings continue to unfold, highlighting the complex and multifaceted nature of the allegations against the 66-year-old actor. Spacey, once one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars, has maintained that either the incidents never occurred or were consensual encounters.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Spacey was absent, but his legal team vigorously opposed the inclusion of the seven additional testimonies. These new accounts come from men alleging sexual assault by Spacey across several decades: one from the late 1970s, two from the late 1990s, and four others spanning the 2000s and 2010s. The claimants’ attorney, Elizabeth-Anne Gumbel, argued that these testimonies collectively demonstrate Spacey’s alleged “propensity to sexually assault young men,” emphasizing that his celebrity status may have been exploited to facilitate such acts. Conversely, Spacey’s defense contends that these separate allegations do not establish a consistent pattern of misconduct relevant to the three claimants’ cases and should therefore be excluded from the trial.

Judge Christina Lambert is expected to deliver a ruling on whether the court will permit the inclusion of these additional allegations in the civil trial. The decision will be pivotal in shaping the scope of the upcoming proceedings and could potentially influence the overall narrative surrounding Spacey’s conduct over several decades.

In a related development, one of the three men suing Spacey also filed a lawsuit against the Old Vic theatre in London, where Spacey served as artistic director from 2003. The theatre has since reached a settlement with the claimant, resolving the case against it without admitting any liability. The Old Vic issued a statement explaining that the settlement was reached considering the financial costs and emotional toll litigation imposes on all parties involved. However, the claimant’s legal action against Spacey himself remains active and unresolved.

Kevin Spacey’s career suffered a dramatic downfall following the initial public accusations of sexual assault in 2017. Once celebrated for his performances in critically acclaimed films such as “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” Spacey was swiftly removed from the hit Netflix series “House of Cards” and replaced in the film “All the Money in the World.” Despite a civil lawsuit in the United States being dismissed by a jury in 2022, Spacey faced criminal charges in London the following year, where he was accused of sexually assaulting four men. The court ultimately acquitted him of all nine charges, yet the civil claims continue to cast a long shadow over his legacy.
