Rehabilitated Brown Bear Rano to Be Released into Gilgit-Baltistan Habitat

Rano, a Himalayan brown bear previously housed at Karachi Zoo, is set to be released into her natural environment in Gilgit-Baltistan following nine months of intensive rehabilitation at the Margalla Wildlife Rescue Centre in Islamabad.

The bear was transferred from Karachi to Islamabad on November 5 under orders from the Sindh High Court, which intervened after concerns were raised about her living conditions. Initially, Rano was confined in a Victorian-era pit and later kept in a small, barren cage with hard flooring, which sparked outrage among animal rights activists who petitioned for her relocation to a more suitable sanctuary.

Upon arrival in Islamabad, Rano was in poor health, surviving only on milk and bread. However, after dedicated care from the Margalla Wildlife Rescue Centre staff, she has made a remarkable recovery. She now consumes a natural diet including corn, herbs, grass, and fruits, and the wound on her head has fully healed.

Wildlife authorities in Islamabad have expressed their gratitude to the rescue centre team for their efforts in restoring Rano’s health. They view her successful rehabilitation as a significant accomplishment and a crucial step toward ensuring her well-being.

In a significant development, plans are underway to transfer Rano to Gilgit-Baltistan as the next phase of her rehabilitation. Authorities are coordinating with the Sindh government to facilitate this move, aiming to eventually release her into a natural habitat that is more appropriate for her species.

This upcoming relocation marks an important milestone in Rano’s journey from captivity to freedom, reflecting ongoing efforts to provide rescued wildlife with environments that support their natural behaviors and health.
