The Federal Investigation Agency has taken notice of the death of Laiba Ijaz, a 20-year-old student of the International Islamic University Islamabad, whose body was found after she allegedly lost Rs5 million to a travel agent. FIA Director Shehzad Bukhari has taken up the case, and the agency has reached out to the family for further details, according to relatives.
Laiba’s maternal uncle, Rana Amjad, confirmed that FIA officials had contacted the family about the matter. Police said she was found near a green belt close to Itwar Bazaar in Sector G-10, under the jurisdiction of Ramna police station.
Alleged fraud over US education visa documents
Police officials said Laiba, a resident of G-10 Markaz, had allegedly handed Rs5 million to an agent to arrange her education trip to the United States. She later found that the papers she had been given were allegedly not genuine.
Police said she was reportedly under heavy mental strain after uncovering the alleged deception. She left her home at about 2pm without telling her family, who later used her mobile phone’s location to trace her.
Suspected suicide under investigation as probe continues
Police said her body was found hanging from a tree in the green belt, and the incident appeared to be a suspected suicide. An investigation is still under way to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Investigators are also looking into the alleged fraud and the role of the travel agent said to have collected the funds for her planned American trip. Officials said the final circumstances will become clearer once the post-mortem is done and the inquiry is complete.
