Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle was honoured with a ceremonial farewell in Mumbai on Monday, her casket draped in the Indian national flag as the nation paid homage to one of its most iconic voices. The tribute ceremony took place at her residence in Lower Parel, where family, close friends, and admirers gathered to celebrate her remarkable legacy.
Soldiers formally covered her casket with the tricolour, which was adorned with white lilies, symbolizing respect and remembrance. Bhosle passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital after suffering from multi-organ failure. She had been admitted the previous day due to a severe chest infection and fatigue. She is survived by her son and granddaughter, who remained close to the family throughout the mourning period.
A steady flow of visitors came to her home to pay their final respects, with tributes continuing well into the afternoon. The funeral procession was scheduled to proceed to Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar later in the day. The last rites marked the final farewell to a figure whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema and music.
The atmosphere at the residence was deeply emotional, as family members received condolences from across the film and music industries. Notable public figures, including actor Tabu, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali, music composer A. R. Rahman, and veteran actress Asha Parekh, visited to offer their sympathies.
Several visitors were seen consoling Bhosle’s granddaughter, Zanai, in moments filled with grief and reflection. The sight of the flag-draped casket surrounded by white flowers and ceremonial honours underscored the immense contribution Asha Bhosle made to Indian music over more than eight decades.
Her passing leaves a significant void in the country’s artistic landscape, with tributes pouring in from around the world celebrating a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
