Twelve migrants died on Monday while trying to cross the Aegean Sea, Greek authorities said. Six of them were found dead after their boat collided with a police vessel off the island of Lesbos.
Lesbos collision involved a police patrol vessel
A baby and four women were among the six people who died off Lesbos after the collision, a coast guard official said. The official said a speedboat carrying migrants struck the port side of a police patrol vessel, and eight people were rescued.
Samos capsizing and wider Aegean route risks
The other six dead, five men and a woman, were on a small boat that capsized off Samos, the coast guard added. Another 14 people were rescued, including a presumed Iranian organiser.
The Aegean is a heavily used route for migrants travelling from Turkey toward Europe, and deaths there have been numerous. In September, one person died and 25 remained missing after a boat sank off Gavdos, near Crete.
