Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that Tehran backs a “political process” to end the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
Speaking at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Baghdad, Araghchi said an inclusive and comprehensive political track was the only workable and lasting route. He also repeated Iran’s offer to mediate between the two sides, though Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh had earlier said Riyadh has not answered Tehran’s overture.
Houthi attacks on Saudi targets and Iran’s denial
The Houthis have struck Saudi targets repeatedly, including energy facilities and Riyadh’s international airport, where 13 people were killed in a major attack last week. On Friday, Iran denied any link to the Houthi strikes after Saudi Arabia accused Tehran of encouraging the group’s escalation.
Araghchi calls for shared security
In his speech, Araghchi said that “either we build security together, or we will endure insecurity together.” He added that Tehran was prepared to work with its neighbours toward that goal.
The Houthis and Hezbollah in Lebanon are part of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” against Israel and the United States.
