Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, held a phone call with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the Saudi state news agency said. The ministers discussed recent escalations in the region after Houthis, backed by Iran, attacked Saudi airports.
In a Telegram post on Sunday, Araghchi said that insisting on a military approach while ignoring political solutions would further complicate the situation. He said the region’s crises have no military solutions, and that last week he had said “there is no military solution” to the US war.
He added that Iran was ready to help start dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen and to support a political solution.
Trump reacts to deadly Riyadh airport attack
After the attack on Riyadh airport, which killed 12 people and wounded 300, US President Donald Trump said he would reconsider Washington’s role in Yemen. He also said he was weighing a resumption of strikes on Iran, a shift from his Thursday comments that strikes would not resume until after the US midterm elections.
Saudi-Iranian ties strained by the wider war
Diplomatic ties have endured despite longstanding friction, with embassies restored under a 2023 Chinese-brokered agreement still operating.
Relations have deteriorated since the US-Israel war on Iran began in late February. Tehran and its aligned forces have struck US military assets and energy infrastructure across the Gulf, including oil fields in Saudi Arabia. In March 2026, Prince Faisal warned that tolerance of attacks on Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states was limited and urged Tehran to “recalculate” its strategy.
