Russian officials reported numerous cyberattacks targeting voting systems and communication networks nationwide on Saturday, the second day of the country’s three-day parliamentary election.
In Moscow, the online voting platform endured a significant cyber assault overnight. Despite the intensity of the attack, election authorities confirmed that the situation remained under control and all threats were being effectively countered.
Ella Pamfilova, head of the Central Election Commission, stated that while the attacks persisted, every attempt was successfully thwarted, ensuring the integrity of the voting process.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development disclosed that sabotage efforts were detected on communication lines in the Far East region. The ministry confirmed that the attack was neutralized promptly, and full communication services were restored without disruption.
The parliamentary election commenced on Friday, with Russians casting their votes over three days. Earlier, President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of attempting to interfere with the electoral process, though no evidence was presented to support this claim.
The Kremlin is expected to use the election results to demonstrate broad public endorsement of Putin’s policies, particularly his management of the ongoing conflict in Europe, now entering its fifth year and regarded as the deadliest since World War Two.
Notably, most candidates opposing the war have been excluded from the ballot, limiting the scope of political competition in this election cycle.
