An early hands-on video suggests Apple has not fully fixed the “crease problem” on its foldable iPhone Duo, even though early reports from the launch event indicated it had been solved. A few customers received the phone slightly ahead of its official shipping start on Friday, October 23.
Softer cover sets the Duo apart from rivals
Apple has taken a different approach from its competitors. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a flexible but hard surface made with “Ultra Thin Glass,” while Apple uses a softer cover that is cheaper to replace if it gets scratched.
The video shows that this hinge and display design makes the foldable screen especially soft just above the hinge.
How visible the crease is on the display
Running a finger across the area makes the crease easy to see and even feel. When the display is untouched, however, the crease is hardly noticeable.
It is not clear how the design will hold up over time. On many foldable phones, the middle crease becomes more noticeable the more often the phone is folded and unfolded. Official shipping is likely to bring more videos, but no final conclusions should be drawn until then.
