Sora Shutdown Ends Disney’s $1 Billion Video Deal with OpenAI

OpenAI’s Sora, an AI app known for its quirky and often bizarre video generation, is shutting down, abruptly halting a significant partnership with Disney. The app had gained attention for its humorous content but also faced criticism for its limited controls and unpredictable output.

In December 2025, Disney had proposed a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, aiming to integrate its beloved characters—such as Elsa, Darth Vader, and Mickey Mouse—into videos generated by Sora. The plan was to develop fan-inspired content using Disney’s licensed properties, potentially making these AI-created clips available on Disney+.

However, with OpenAI’s recent announcement to discontinue Sora, the ambitious deal has now been canceled. The company described the closure as a “disappointing update” after the app’s launch last year, signaling the end of its only video generation platform.

Meanwhile, the shutdown has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users welcomed the news, viewing it as a sign that fears about AI’s growing influence might be overstated. Others speculated that OpenAI could be facing financial difficulties or struggling to improve the app’s underperforming AI model.

It is worth noting that the termination of this deal marks a significant setback for both OpenAI and Disney, who had hoped to pioneer new forms of interactive and fan-driven entertainment through artificial intelligence.
