Turkey have named Sergen Yalcin as their new head coach on a four-year contract, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced on Tuesday. He succeeds Vincenzo Montella, who was dismissed earlier this month after a difficult UEFA Nations League campaign.
The 53-year-old former midfielder takes over with Turkey bottom of Group A1 after four consecutive defeats. The side also crashed out at the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
Yalcin’s playing and managerial career
Yalcin won 37 caps between 1994 and 2003, featuring at Euro 1996 and Euro 2000. He played for Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.
As a coach, he guided Besiktas to the 2020–21 Super Lig and Turkish Cup double. He ended a second spell in charge of the club in May.
TFF hopes the appointment proves successful
The federation said it wished Yalcin success in his new role and hoped the decision would prove beneficial for the country and its national team.
