Australia declared their second innings on Monday, during day four of the opening Test at Kingsmead, leaving South Africa a target of 421. Matt Renshaw provided the late impetus with a brisk 82 from 99 balls, a sharp change of pace from his earlier, patient 190.
Renshaw’s dismissal and Cummins’s quick-fire finish
Renshaw, 30, was within reach of a second century in the match when Keshav Maharaj, diving, completed a juggling return catch. The dismissal needed an umpire’s review to be confirmed. Captain Pat Cummins then hit four sixes in an unbeaten 32 from 12 balls before the declaration.
Time and bad light could shape the finish
Australia’s aggressive scoring was meant to leave enough time to dismiss South Africa. A nominal 144 overs remain, but bad light had already cut 49 overs from the first three days and could again play a part.
