The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal-Ur-Rehman (JUI-F) has moved resolutions in both the Senate and the National Assembly against the emergency rule imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), describing the step as unconstitutional.
Senator Kamran Murtaza presented the motion in the upper house, while MNA Alia Kamran tabled a comparable resolution in the lower house. The documents condemn the emergency and the measures that followed from it, warning that it could erode provincial autonomy and the constitutional rights of the province’s people.
JUI-F demands withdrawal of KP emergency order
The party has asked the federal government to place before parliament the summary and reports behind the decision. It also urged the president and the federal government to lift the emergency order immediately and cancel all administrative directives issued as a result.
Constitutional objections and copies sent to top officials
According to the resolutions, Article 232 of the Constitution obliges the president to be convinced that the legal prerequisites for an emergency are fulfilled. It was further alleged that the president approved the emergency without weighing those constitutional requirements.
The documents have been forwarded to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the federal law minister and other relevant authorities.
