India has made a last-minute change to its male flagbearer for the Asian Games opening ceremony scheduled for Saturday in Nagoya, Japan. The original choice, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who is competing for his third consecutive gold medal in the shot put event, was unable to participate due to a delay in receiving his official ceremonial kit. This unexpected logistical issue forced the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to appoint kabaddi star Pawan Sehrawat as the new male flagbearer.
Meanwhile, the female flagbearer role remains with shooter Manu Bhaker, who earned two bronze medals at the recent Paris Olympics. Bhaker’s selection highlights her rising prominence in Indian sports and her significant achievements on the international stage.
Toor explained the situation, stating that his kit was still in India and was only expected to arrive at the Nagoya airport by 3 PM, making it impossible for him to reach the opening ceremony venue on time. He mentioned that the IOA had informed him about his flagbearer role just the day before, which left no opportunity for his coach, who had already arrived in Japan, to collect the kit on his behalf. This miscommunication and delay ultimately led Toor to withdraw from the ceremony.
The IOA confirmed the change in a statement, citing a “technical issue” as the reason behind Toor’s inability to carry the flag. This incident underscores the complexities and challenges involved in organizing large-scale international sporting events, where even minor logistical errors can have significant consequences.
