Alex Palou Wins Detroit Grand Prix, Extends IndyCar Championship Lead

Alex Palou reinforced his commanding IndyCar season by capturing victory at the Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday. Starting from pole position, the Spanish driver crossed the finish line 3.058 seconds ahead of Kyle Kirkwood at the 1.645-mile street circuit, further consolidating his lead in the championship standings.

Kyle Kirkwood finished in second place representing Andretti Global, while Graham Rahal secured the final podium spot in third. Arrow McLaren teammates Pato O’Ward and Christian Lundgaard completed the top five, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

This triumph marked the 23rd IndyCar win of Palou’s career, tying him with Tommy Milton for 20th place on the series’ all-time winners list. At 29 years old, Palou is pursuing his fourth consecutive IndyCar title and fifth championship overall.

The race featured six full-course cautions, posing a demanding challenge for drivers and their teams. Will Power led the field from Lap 18 through Lap 35 before Scott McLaughlin and Lundgaard briefly took over at the front.

A pivotal moment occurred on Lap 40 when Graham Rahal was spun out at Turn 3 following contact with Kyffin Simpson, triggering another caution. This incident allowed Palou to regain control of the race.

Palou then built a solid lead, although a sequence of pit stops temporarily shuffled the running order. Nevertheless, a well-executed strategy by Chip Ganassi Racing enabled him to reclaim the lead after his competitors completed their stops.

Maintaining control for the remainder of the event, Palou secured yet another impressive win. Reflecting on the victory, he said, “It feels like the first time, honestly. It was a tough one, but the team did an incredible job with the strategy and pit stops.”

Indy 500 champion Felix Rosenqvist finished in sixth place.

Following eight races this season, Palou tops the championship standings with 327 points. Kirkwood holds second place with 265 points, while David Malukas remains third with 248 points despite finishing 18th at Detroit.
