Berlin Airport Chief Warns of Unbearable EU Border Delays This Summer

The head of Berlin’s airport has issued a warning about significant delays at EU borders this summer, attributing the issue to the recently implemented Entry-Exit System. This new system, designed to enhance security and monitor travelers more effectively, is causing extended wait times that are proving difficult for holidaymakers. The airport chief emphasized that the current situation is unsustainable, especially during the busy travel season when passenger volumes surge.

Introduced to strengthen the EU’s external border management, the Entry-Exit System records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals, aiming to improve migration control and reduce irregular stays. However, the increased processing time per traveler has led to bottlenecks at major airports, including Berlin, raising concerns among airlines and passengers alike. The delays not only inconvenience tourists but also risk economic impacts on the travel and tourism sectors that rely heavily on smooth border operations.

In a significant development, authorities are under pressure to find solutions that balance security with efficiency to prevent further disruption. The situation highlights the challenges faced by the EU in implementing new border technologies while maintaining a positive travel experience. Meanwhile, travelers are advised to prepare for longer wait times and plan accordingly to avoid missing flights or connections during the peak holiday period.
