ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday called for extensive reforms within the National Tariff Commission (NTC), emphasizing that its efficient and transparent operation is crucial for advancing Pakistan’s industry, trade, and investment sectors.

During a review meeting held in Islamabad, the prime minister highlighted the need for institutional restructuring of the NTC, followed by measures to ensure its performance aligns with international standards. He urged the development of a comprehensive strategy to address the legal and administrative challenges faced by the commission, linking these reforms to broader economic objectives such as industrial expansion and increased foreign and domestic investment.

In a significant development, Sharif instructed relevant authorities to fully digitise all operational functions of the NTC to enhance transparency and improve service delivery. He stressed that the commission must simplify legal and procedural hurdles to better facilitate investors and industrialists.

Moreover, the prime minister directed that international best practices be examined and adopted to bring the commission in line with global benchmarks. He underscored the importance of integrating modern technologies, including information technology and artificial intelligence, to modernize the institution effectively.

Sharif also addressed the legal complexities within the NTC’s appellate tribunal, calling for streamlined processes to boost efficiency. He made it clear that delays in case resolution would not be tolerated and mandated the establishment of a system to ensure all cases are concluded within a fixed timeframe.

Furthermore, the prime minister emphasized the necessity of having a trained and skilled workforce that meets international standards. He recommended engaging experts to provide guidance and support for the ongoing reform initiatives.

Officials briefed that efforts are currently underway to restructure the NTC institutionally, legally, and administratively, following a roadmap approved by the prime minister.

The meeting included Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan, along with senior government officials.
