On Wednesday, the newly-appointed Chinese Consul General in Lahore, Sun Yan, paid an official visit to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The meeting provided a platform for both leaders to discuss a broad range of topics aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between Punjab and China. This engagement marks an important step in reinforcing the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two sides.

During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz warmly welcomed Consul General Sun Yan and extended her congratulations on his recent appointment. In a gesture of goodwill and mutual respect, she accepted his invitation to visit China, signaling Punjab’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. The discussions focused heavily on advancing strategic collaboration, particularly under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which remains a cornerstone of economic and infrastructural development in the region.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of expanding economic and cultural exchanges between Punjab and the Chinese Consulate. They underscored the need to enhance cooperation in critical sectors such as trade, infrastructure development, energy projects, and information technology. Maryam Nawaz highlighted Pakistan-China friendship as an exemplary model of international partnership, praising China’s role in supporting Pakistan’s defense capabilities and contributing to regional stability by helping ease tensions with neighboring countries.

Maryam Nawaz also commended the diplomatic acumen of Consul General Sun Yan, expressing optimism about the future of Punjab-China relations under his tenure. She pointed out China’s vital contribution to Pakistan’s regional security, sovereignty, and overall development. The Chief Minister outlined Punjab’s eagerness to boost collaboration with Chinese partners in areas including industrial growth, technical cooperation, and urban management strategies, all aimed at accelerating economic progress through industrialization and technology-driven initiatives under CPEC.

On his part, Consul General Sun Yan reaffirmed China’s deep appreciation for the enduring friendship shared with Pakistan. He described Sino-Pak relations as a shining example of strategic trust, mutual respect, and unwavering solidarity. He praised Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and development in the region, while acknowledging China’s consistent principled support for Pakistan in international forums. Sun Yan also highlighted the transformative impact of CPEC, describing it as a powerful engine driving regional connectivity and economic integration.

Maryam Nawaz further elaborated on Punjab’s efforts to attract Chinese investment by developing Special Economic Zones (SEZs). She mentioned that key projects like the Allama Iqbal Industrial City and Quaid-e-Azam Business Park in Faisalabad are fully prepared to welcome Chinese investors. The province is actively offering diverse investment opportunities across sectors such as textiles, agriculture, renewable energy, electric mobility, waste management, and information technology. To facilitate this, Punjab is establishing a dedicated Punjab China Desk and Business Facilitation Centers to assist Chinese companies in navigating the local business environment.

The Chief Minister also highlighted initiatives like the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade, which are designed to create a more investor-friendly atmosphere. She described the Punjab Economic Zones as “industrial gateways” tailored to attract Chinese investment, focusing on export-oriented manufacturing, supply chain integration, and fostering long-term industrial partnerships. The Quaid-e-Azam Business Park, she noted, operates on a plug-and-play model, offering ready-made infrastructure and utilities to streamline the entry of foreign investors, particularly in the garment sector.

Maryam Nawaz acknowledged the significant role Chinese companies have played in technology transfer, industrial diversification, and job creation within Punjab. She assured that the safety and security of Chinese nationals and projects remain a top priority for the provincial government. Punjab is committed to providing a secure and welcoming environment for Chinese investors and workers, reinforcing its dedication to nurturing a strong and mutually beneficial partnership.

Looking ahead, the Punjab government aims to further deepen cooperation with China in areas such as innovation, green development, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Maryam Nawaz reiterated that China continues to be Pakistan’s largest trading partner and a major investor in critical infrastructure and energy sectors. This meeting between the Punjab Chief Minister and the Chinese Consul General underscores the ongoing commitment to enhancing economic ties and strategic collaboration, which are vital for the prosperity and stability of both regions.
