On Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz held a significant meeting with Sun Yan, the newly appointed Chinese Consul General in Lahore. This encounter marked an important step in reinforcing the longstanding partnership between Punjab and China, focusing on expanding strategic cooperation and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Maryam Nawaz warmly welcomed Sun Yan to his new role and expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations.

During their discussion, both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening economic and cultural ties between the Punjab government and the Chinese Consulate. They agreed on the necessity of promoting collaboration in key sectors such as trade, infrastructure development, energy, and information technology. The meeting also highlighted the mutual commitment to advancing joint projects under the CPEC framework, which remains a cornerstone of Pakistan-China relations.

Maryam Nawaz described the friendship between Pakistan and China as exemplary, underscoring China’s pivotal role in supporting Pakistan’s regional security and sovereignty. She expressed gratitude for China’s ongoing defence cooperation and its efforts to help ease regional tensions. The Chief Minister also praised Sun Yan’s diplomatic skills, noting that his appointment comes at a crucial time for enhancing bilateral engagement.

Elaborating on Punjab’s development agenda, Maryam Nawaz outlined the province’s eagerness to collaborate with Chinese partners in areas such as industrial growth, technical cooperation, and urban management. She stressed that Punjab aims to accelerate economic progress through industrialization, the establishment of logistics corridors, and technology partnerships aligned with CPEC’s vision. The Chief Minister also accepted an invitation from the Consul General to visit China, signaling a desire for closer ties and firsthand experience of Chinese advancements.

Consul General Sun Yan reciprocated by reaffirming the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations, describing Sino-Pak relations as a shining example of strategic trust and mutual respect. He highlighted China’s steadfast support for Pakistan at international platforms and praised Pakistan’s dedication to regional peace and stability. Sun Yan also acknowledged CPEC’s transformative impact on regional connectivity, calling it a vital engine for economic integration.

Maryam Nawaz further detailed Punjab’s efforts to attract Chinese investment through the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). She mentioned that the Allama Iqbal Industrial City and Quaid-e-Azam Business Park in Faisalabad are fully prepared to welcome Chinese investors. The province is actively promoting opportunities in sectors such as textiles, agriculture, renewable energy, electric mobility, waste management, and information technology. To facilitate these investments, Punjab is establishing a dedicated China Desk and Business Facilitation Centers aimed at providing seamless support to Chinese companies.

The Chief Minister also highlighted initiatives like the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade, which are designed to create a business-friendly environment for both local and foreign investors. She described the economic zones as “industrial gateways” tailored to boost export-oriented manufacturing, supply chain integration, and long-term industrial partnerships. Quaid-e-Azam Business Park, in particular, offers a plug-and-play model with ready infrastructure and utilities, making it an attractive destination for foreign enterprises.

Maryam Nawaz acknowledged the significant contributions of Chinese companies in technology transfer, industrial diversification, and job creation within Punjab. She assured that the safety and security of Chinese nationals and projects remain a top priority for the provincial government. The administration is committed to maintaining a secure and welcoming atmosphere for investors and workers alike.

Looking ahead, the Punjab government aims to further enhance cooperation with China in innovation, green development, and advanced manufacturing. Maryam Nawaz reiterated that China is not only Pakistan’s largest trading partner but also a major investor in critical infrastructure and energy sectors. This meeting underscores the shared vision of both sides to deepen economic ties and foster sustainable growth through strategic collaboration.
