Senate Secretariat Clarifies Land Cruiser Purchase Amid Controversy in 2025-26

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Secretariat has issued a detailed statement addressing recent concerns surrounding the purchase of a Land Cruiser for Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani. The vehicle was procured in May 2025, during the 2024-2025 fiscal year, as part of a broader initiative to update and replace official vehicles used by key Senate officials. The Secretariat emphasized that this procurement followed a transparent and regulated process, aimed at ensuring accountability and proper use of public funds.

the spokesperson, this acquisition was not an isolated purchase but formed part of a comprehensive vehicle replacement programme. Alongside the Chairman’s Land Cruiser, new vehicles were also procured for the chairpersons of various standing committees, the Deputy Chairman of the Senate, the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition, as well as the Secretariat’s own fleet. This coordinated effort was designed to maintain the operational efficiency of the Senate’s transport resources, which had become outdated over time.

The Secretariat clarified the timeline of the transaction, noting that while the payment for the Land Cruiser was made in May 2025 using savings from the previous year’s budget, the actual delivery of the vehicle took place much later, in March 2026. This distinction was highlighted to counter claims that the purchase was recent or improperly timed. The spokesperson stressed that the procurement adhered strictly to budgetary provisions and was executed well within the financial regulations governing government expenditures.

In response to circulating media reports, the Senate Secretariat expressed strong disapproval of what it described as misleading and factually inaccurate coverage. The statement accused certain reports of being based on incomplete information and suggested that some narratives were driven by ill intent. The Secretariat urged media outlets to uphold journalistic standards by verifying facts thoroughly before publishing stories related to state institutions, emphasizing the importance of responsible reporting in maintaining public trust.

Meanwhile, voices from within the Senate have also weighed in on the matter. A senator aligned with the treasury benches, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed regret over the timing of the vehicle purchase. The senator pointed out that the decision to acquire a luxury vehicle such as a Land Cruiser seemed ill-advised given the prevailing economic challenges facing the country. With over 70 million Pakistanis living below the poverty line and inflation rates soaring, the senator suggested that such expenditures could be perceived as insensitive to the hardships experienced by the general population.

This incident has sparked a broader debate about government spending priorities, especially in times of economic strain. While the Senate Secretariat defends the purchase as necessary and justified within the framework of official duties and budgetary discipline, critics argue that symbolic gestures like these can undermine public confidence in elected representatives. As the discussion continues, it remains crucial for all stakeholders to balance operational needs with the socio-economic realities confronting Pakistan today.
