Islamabad police to act against false rape complaints

Islamabad’s Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Ali Wasim, has ordered legal proceedings against people allegedly filing false rape complaints under the Anti-Rape Act, police said.

In seven instances, the DIG has directed that complainants and witnesses be booked, police said.

Seven cases and penalties for false statements

Wasim said that people who allegedly gave untrue testimony in return for payment, to have cases thrown out, will also face action.

He added that those who made grave accusations of serious offences to serve their own interests would likewise be subject to legal proceedings.

According to the DIG, the drive is meant to curb misuse of the law and uphold justice. He stressed that securing justice for genuine victims and safeguarding citizens’ rights remain the department’s highest priorities.

FIA takes notice of Laiba Ijaz death

Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took notice of the death of Laiba Ijaz, a 20-year-old student of the International Islamic University Islamabad. She was found dead after allegedly being cheated of Rs5 million by a travel agent who had promised to arrange a US education visa.

FIA Director Shehzad Bukhari has taken up the case, and the agency has reached out to the family for further details, the family said. Laiba’s maternal uncle, Rana Amjad, confirmed that FIA officials had made contact.

Police details on the Ramna police station case

Police said Laiba was found dead near a green belt close to Itwar Bazaar in Sector G-10, under the jurisdiction of Ramna police station. Officials said she, a resident of G-10 Markaz, had allegedly paid an agent Rs5 million for travel to the United States for study, but later found the documents given to her were allegedly fake.

Police said she had reportedly been under severe mental stress after uncovering the alleged fraud, and she left home at about 2pm without telling her family. Her relatives then used her mobile phone’s location to trace her to the green belt, where her body was found suspended from a tree.
