Asfandyar Ahmad, the judicial superintendent of South Waziristan Upper, was forcibly taken from his home in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the early hours of Saturday. The district police officer confirmed that armed men abducted Ahmad around 2 a.m. while he was at his residence.
Authorities reported that the kidnappers arrived on two motorcycles and fled the scene immediately after the abduction. A comprehensive search operation is currently underway to locate and rescue the official. Police have set up checkpoints at multiple points across the district to aid in the recovery efforts.
In a related incident from April 2024, Shakirullah Marwat, the sessions judge of South Waziristan, was also kidnapped near the border area between Tank and DI Khan. Fortunately, he was recovered safely within a day, as confirmed by Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, then adviser to the KP chief minister on information.
Pakistan has experienced a notable increase in violent and terror-related incidents, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, since the Afghan Taliban assumed control in 2021. Despite repeated appeals from Pakistan for the Afghan Taliban regime to curb terrorist activities, Kabul has shown reluctance to take decisive action against groups operating from its territory.
Notably, this abduction occurred just one day after a deadly attack at a mosque inside Kohat Police Lines during Friday prayers, which resulted in multiple fatalities, including police personnel, and left over 100 injured.
